The notes on the staff represent the pitch of a note, and the duration of the note is determined by the shape of the note head and the stem. The note head can be either filled in or empty, and the stem can be either up or down.

The notes on the staff are grouped into measures, and each measure is divided into two measures by a bar line. The time signature at the beginning of the music tells you how many beats are in each measure, and the note values tell you how long each beat is.

There are three ways to sing a note: on the pitch, sharp, or flat. When you see a sharp symbol (#), it means to sing the note one half step higher than the note on the staff. When you see a flat symbol (b), it means to sing the note one half step lower than the note on the staff. When you see the word "natural," it means to sing the note on the pitch.
