What makes sound louder is the amplitude of the sound wave. The amplitude of a sound wave is the magnitude of the displacement of the particles in the wave from their equilibrium position. This is determined by the sound pressure of the wave. Greater sound pressure will result in a greater amplitude, and therefore a louder sound.
