The first music streaming service was developed in 1998 by Michael Robertson of MP3.com. The service allowed users to listen to music on demand over the internet.
However, the first mainstream music streaming service was Napster, which was launched in 1999. Napster allowed users to listen to music for free, and allowed them to share music with other users.
Napster was shut down in 2001, but other music streaming services soon emerged, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal.
